The critic knows how to take something apart.

But not how to assemble it.

The critic will say.

I’m just being brutally honest.

Do you like anything that’s brutal, including honesty?

I don’t.

Honesty is honesty.

But honesty that’s motivated by shame, anger, fear or hurt.

Is not “honesty.”

It’s shame, anger, fear and hurt.

True criticism will set you free.

It won’t be personal, inaccurate, or unclear.

It won’t be humiliating.

It won’t be abusive in tone.

True criticism asks.

Is the work going well?

If not.

What can you do to improve?
