To be vulnerable is to show weakness. Is to open up. Is to share. Even when it hurts. Even if it feels like I’m not going to talk about it. And to talk about it anyway.

Why are you practicing vulnerability?
I practice it because it matters. I believe there’s support out there. I open up. To receive the support.

What’s your response to a violation of you being vulnerable?
For a while. I shut down. And that’s okay, it’s a part of the process.

Was vulnerability encouraged growing up?
Not that I recall. More often it was seen as a weakness. I was told to move on. To get over it.

Who is supportive of vulnerability in your family?
I have an aunt who is but isn’t. Mostly it comes from outside. I nurture it with my daughter.

Any mentors along the way?
No. Sadly, I am usually the one who is the mentor for this stuff. I believe I need to open up and be vulnerable. I believe it’s of value to me and those around.

What book that helped?
Books by Brene Brown. Year of Yes by Shondra Rhimes and How to Live a Good Life by Johnathon Fields. Very helpful and nurturing in the area of vulnerability.

Any advice to a person struggling to be vulnerable?
It’s going to be hard. It’s going to be scary. In the end. It’s going to make you a better you.
